Gear heads are constantly trying to find the best or most advanced parts for their cars, whether it be new suspension parts or the latest tunes for increased performance. With all that spirited driving going on, there’s one little mod that a lot of people forget about: the oil catch can. That is why we are featuring Mishimoto’s Compact Baffled Oil Catch Can.
Mishimoto is one of those companies that goes above and beyond in their engineering, delivering an effective and efficient product to the end consumer. This Compact Baffled Oil Catch Can is one of those products that is simple, yet the amount of engineering will blow your mind. The project started when the Mishimoto R&D team went from forum to forum and shop to shop asking what consumers expect out of a catch can. The team determined six points to be focused on throughout the project:
- Focus on air and oil separation
- Smaller size that previous oil catch can
- Included a baffle system for maximum efficiency
- Universal mounting system to be compatible with all builds
- Have unique yet subtle styling
- Include both two-port and three-port options
The result of working towards these points is what this post is all about, the Mishimoto Compact Baffled Oil Catch Can. Let’s quickly go over the points mentioned and how this catch can handles them all.
Stock systems allow oil back into your intake, causing unwanted back up and damage to your engine. Therefore, the main job of a catch can is to separate air and oil, thus preventing harmful oil particles from entering your intake. An internal air diverter tumbles the air inside the catch can for a longer time, making sure oil sinks to the bottom of the can. Once the air and oil is separated, the air then flows through a 50 micron bronze filter and into the intake.
This is called the COMPACT Baffled Oil Catch Can for a reason. Mishimoto heard from its consumers that size does in fact matter, so the dimensions here have been downsized to ensure a fit with your build. The catch can measures 3.80″ tall and 2.50″ in diameter without fittings, holding up to 2 fl oz. and weighing 0.9lbs when assembled (these numbers are based on the two-port version). This sizing is much smaller than the original Baffled Oil Catch Can which measures in at 6.00″x 3.06″. You won’t have a problem finding a way to fit this into your build.
The internal baffling system is where this product really shines. The baffle ensures that oil does not splash around and onto the bronze filter or back out of the catch can, or worse yet into your intake. You can see the baffle system above on the left, mounted below the filter. This baffle system not only keeps oil in its place, but it is also easily serviced via the drain plug allowing a return to the oil pan. So this is a system that not only cleans your car’s air, but keeps blow-by in a tidy location that’s easy to clean.
Mounting was also a point Mishimoto wanted to look into, and it’s never been easier. Here you can see an example of the catch can installed before the base has been attached, exposing the baffling system. The universal mounting bracket is included with the catch can, making your life that much easier. So whether you have a fully built race machine or you just love to care for your daily, you’ll find a way to mount this catch can.
To make things even better, all of these engineering is delivered in a great looking package. The can itself is constructed of 6061 Anodized Aluminum, and finished in black. The design won’t stand out in a negative way, but it delivers a subtle aggressiveness to your engine bay. Again, it’s offered in either a two or three port option, ready to tackle whatever you have to throw at it.
In all the Mishimoto Compact Baffled Oil Catch Can is a great mod for those looking to increase the lifespan of their engine, on or off the track. The best part of all, is that this is a universal product, meaning it does not matter if you have a BMW or a Scion!
