There are plenty of ways to love your Porsche 718 Cayman GTS and everyone enjoys spending quality time with them differently. But one thing that’s difficult to beat is getting your Porsche out for the day, heading to a track, and driving it like it’s meant to be driven. Now, not everyone wants to track their cars and that’s fine but for those that do, how well can you stop at peak power?
Recently we had a customer walk into our shop Mod Auto with a goal in mind—how could he chase even greater lap times on the track and have a more enjoyable experience at the same time? With the help and expertise from our Mod Expert Eddie, he was able to point our customer Aaron in the right direction and transform the brake system on his car. Let us show you how we did this!Aaron went with the AP Racing by Essex Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kit. If you’re familiar with the Radi-CAL design, chances are you know its main advantages. If you’re unfamiliar, well, we’re here to fill in the blanks for you! First, the AP Racing brake kits have a well-known history in the professional racing industry dating back to 2007 when they ran in competition for the first time and ended up winning. The AP Racing Radi-CAL design is currently one of the most advanced brake caliper designs on the market and that understandably shows you why our customer Aaron had no trouble with settling on the AP Racing Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kit.In traditional big brake kits, you’re limited to a small percentage of stiffness increase but with the AP Racing by Essex Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kit you’re getting a whopping 30% increase in both static and dynamic stiffness ready for the track. The incredible stiffness combined with the asymmetrical piston signing gives the Radi-CAL’s more evenly distributed and strong clamping force. This means improved stopping power with improved feedback from the system as a whole while improving pad and rotor life.
In terms of brake calipers, the AP Racing by Essex Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kit will really take your brakes into GT3 territory. The Radi-CAL Forged calipers are designed to be lighter, stronger, and more efficient at dissipating heat than other performance calipers. If your Porsche came with carbon-ceramic brakes, the AP Racing J Hook rotors are still an excellent upgrade for the track. The J-Hook design gives you the benefits of both drilled and slotted rotors without the drawbacks and the large directional vanes give them superior cooling abilities. Brake’s are all about managing heat, and there isn’t a better system for it on the market that isn’t designed for race only applications. This kit allows you to push your Porsche harder and for more laps without worrying about overheating or brake fade.To wrap things up, we finished off the install with some Motul RBF660 Brake Fluid that is more suited for the track than the factory swill. In our previous blog (that you can find here) we mentioned that our Mod Expert recommended to our customer that the Motul RBF600 DOT4 Racing Brake Fluid was a perfect combination to his BMW 340i. However, our Mod Expert Eddie knew that Aaron would be taking his Cayman GTS to the track and recommended a racing focused option with the Motul RB660 DOT4 Racing Brake Fluid. Both Aaron and Mod Expert Eddie knew the kind of abuse braking systems take on the track, the higher boiling point will help it keep up with the new brake kit and last a little longer than the Motul RBF600.Our customer Aaron was incredibly pleased with his new brake system and is excited to get on the track to witness how well the AP Racing by Essex Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kit performs. We couldn’t be any happier in assisting him and we look forward to helping him again soon! The entire installation was done at our Mod Auto facility in La Habra, California.
