Miguel has been a long time customer of Sr Mod Expert Alan Wei – we featured his E90 BMW M3 a while back when we installed those massive WORK wheels, but like every other car on the road, M3’s need maintenance too. However, the average oil change shop probably isn’t the place you want touching your S65 4.0L V8 – speaking as a former quick-oil-change employee, I wouldn’t recommend it – it’s too easy for an inexperienced tech to strip the damn oil filter housing and screw up changing the cartridge – nor would we recommend using just any motor oil in a finely tuned piece of machinery like the S65. In previous articles, we’ve talked about why the oil the manufacturer recommends isn’t always the best (spoiler alert: the manufacturer recommends whatever brand oil pays the most for their endorsement), and also discussed how BMW has gotten it wrong before about their oil change intervals (proving that much to BMW purists’ chagrin, that BMW’s engineers are NOT infallible), so finding an oil that’s great for the motor isn’t as easy as a trip to the parts store. A true synthetic oil like Motul is an ideal choice, though there are a few other true synthetics on the market as well.
That’s why when it came time for an oil change and tune-up, Miguel didn’t take his M3 just anywhere- he brought his M3 to the Mod Experts.
To make things easy, we offer a complete Motul BMW S65 4.0L V8 Oil Change Kit with all the Motul you’ll need and a genuine BMW Oil Filter. At Miguel’s request, we’ll also be changing the spark plugs out for a set of NGKs to ensure consistent performance for many more miles to come.
Sr Tech Dave can be seen here removing the housing for the S65’s oil filter. As simple as this system is, you’d be horrified to find out how many “quick lube” type shops manage to screw it up, which is why it’s important you find a knowledgeable shop you can trust in your area. Here’s the old filter cartridge coming out – certainly looks like it’s at the end of its lifespan. While we don’t normally do a lot of tune-up type maintenance, when it comes to performance cars, our techs at ModAuto are more than capable of caring for your car. Here’s a glimpse of the plug opening of the S65 – the DOHC V8 isn’t exactly easy access, which can make this kind of job a bit overwhelming for the average corner gas station.
Here’s the fresh BMW filter going in.Here’s a look at the motor with the filter housing reassembled and the fresh NGK Spark Plugs installed, just before filling the motor to capacity.
Here’s a look at the NGK spark plugs that came out of Miguel’s S65. After changing the plugs and a fresh oil change, Miguel’s E90 M3 sounded as beastly and healthy as ever – and made a great contrast to Sr Mod Expert Alan Wei‘s F82 BMW M4 parked next to it.Really, that’s all there is to say here, so here are a few gratuitous ///M-car photos.
